The Book of Shadows: A Guide
The Book of Shadows is a workbook containing summons, ritual models, spells, runes, rules governing magic, and more. While some books are passed down from one Wiccan to another during initiation, today, each Wiccan often creates their own book.
It's also a tool for advancement on the Wiccan path. How is that possible? Well, it is recommended that apart from spells and rituals, you include experiences, doubts, concepts, goals, and more. Reviewing it periodically will help you realize how much you have progressed, identify your weaknesses, and work on them.

Misconceptions About the Book of Shadows
The most common misconception is that many Wiccans think the name comes from the time when witches were persecuted and had to keep their knowledge "in the shadows."
Another misguided belief is that people unfamiliar with Wicca imagine a Book of Shadows contains satanic invocations, demonic rituals, and everything related to "satan." This is totally false. Wiccans do not believe in the antithesis of the Christian God (i.e., satan), so it is illogical to claim that Wiccans worship this being if they don't even believe in its existence.
The term "Book of Shadows" was invented by Gardner, who derived the name from a Sanskrit document that spoke of divination through shadows. Although the two have nothing to do with each other, Gardner liked the name and adapted it.
Many Wiccans prefer the term "Grimoire," which has been used by many magicians throughout history to refer to their magical books. This custom continues with ceremonial wizards and witches today.
How to Make a Book of Shadows
Thanks to modern technology, many people save information on their hard drives and CDs, which has led to a decline in the tradition of making the Book of Shadows by hand. While digital versions may be more convenient, many Wiccans prefer to handwrite their books.
You don't need to buy a large, leather-bound book with a metal pentagram on the cover. While they are beautiful, they are not indispensable. Your Book of Shadows is a learning tool and an information compiler, so it’s important to put some of your personality into it. You can take any notebook and decorate it or make a recycled leaf notebook yourself, which would not only save trees but also imbue it with your energy. Writing your BoS by hand is highly recommended.
Many people print pages they find online and compile their book with pure printouts. This displays a lack of creativity and effort, and you learn little from it. When you write in your BoS, you become familiar with rituals and can adapt and change them, something a printed sheet cannot achieve.
If you choose to make your own, here are some recommendations:
- Choose the Size and Materials: Gather materials you might need to decorate, set, and organize.
- Fabricate the Leaves: Look for leaves you can recycle, cut them into pieces, and soak them. When well-soaked, blend them into a thick pulp, adding glycerin or sap to help the liquid absorb faster. Cut two pieces of fabric in the shape of a leaf, place an amount of the pulp between them, press to smooth, remove excess water, and let dry.
- Decorate the Cover: Use paint, colors, etc. Dark colors are a good option as they absorb a lot of energy, which is necessary for your book.
What to Write
To begin, ensure that the physical book is how you want it and doesn't cause any negative feelings. In it, you will deposit all your energy to compile the most important information you should know about Wicca magic and your study and practice in Wicca life.
A Book of Shadows should contain four important parts:
- Basic Information: About the religion, Wicca history, forms, and applications.
- Wicca Principles: Indispensable information for Wiccan life, laws governing and applying justice. Everything you need to know before you practice.
- Your Learning: Includes everything you learn throughout your study and dedication, whether within a coven or as a solitary practitioner.
- Practice: Once you finish your part as an apprentice, you can start practicing. This section should contain your practices, jobs, spells, and performances to help you improve every day.
Used Alphabets in a Book of Shadows
Many Wiccans prefer their spells and experiences to be unreadable by anyone who might access their Book of Shadows. Over the years, various alphabets have been used to hide the content.
This practice is not exclusive to Wiccans; ceremonial magicians have also used different alphabets. While it is not necessary to write your Book of Shadows in a different alphabet, it is a matter of personal choice.
